Ancient Languages

Why study ancient languages?

Ancient languages are languages that are no longer spoken by a community or used as a native language but are still used in some specific situations. For example, Latin is commonly used for drafting documents within the Vatican City.

ProLingua International organizes courses in classical languages (Hebrew, Latin and Greek) aimed at religious students and students of pontifical universities.

Latin

Latin is one of the most influential dead languages. In fact, there are about 42 languages that derive from Latin. In addition, Ancient Greek has had a great impact on modern languages as well.

Latin is not only the root of some modern languages but is also important for the Christian church and because it is the "lingua franca" in science, medicine, philosophy and politics. For example, 90% of technical and scientific terms are derived from ancient Greek and Latin.

Acient and Modern Greek

This language dominated parts of Europe from the 9th century BC to the 6th century AD. Furthermore, it is the language of intellectuals as it was used by Aristotle, Socrates and Homer.

Reading ancient literary works is also fundamental, as they allow for an encounter with the pillars of the past and a direct comparison with them.

Biblical Hebrew

Hebrew belongs to the Canaanite languages, which in turn belong to the "Semitic" language group. In the centuries when Hebrew was no longer the spoken language, it continued to serve from generation to generation as the main instrument of written communication for Jews. Its status among Jews was then analogous to that of Latin in Western Europe among Christians. This was especially true in matters of a halachic nature: for the drafting of documents for religious courts, for collections of halakhot, for commentaries on sacred texts, etc. Even the drafting of letters and contracts between Jews was often done in Hebrew.
